SOFEC, Inc. is a leader in the development and supply of Single-Point Mooring (SPM) systems and is engaged in research involving new and improved tanker mooring systems and associated components. Projects range from preliminary design studies to major engineering, fabrication, and procurement projects that include installation and commission. Projects supplied by SOFEC include marine terminals for product import / export, turrets, tower yoke and spread moorings for tanker based floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO / FSO) systems installed in water depths ranging from 30 feet to 5,000 ft. SOFEC is currently looking for a Piping Engineering Manager.

The Piping Engineering Manager will lead and manage the piping engineering group within the multi-discipline SOFEC Engineering Department.

Responsibilities include maintaining technical competencies within the piping engineering group, manages the piping group’s technical support of the Business Development Group and the Project Management Teams. Ensures the piping group’s capabilities align with the company’s strategic goals.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Defines, implements, and monitors Piping Group’s practices, policies, and procedures for assigned area synchronizing these with the Engineering Department’s goals, along with the project management and operations functions.
  • Responsible for the piping departments performance management appraisals, assisting direct reports with goal setting, engaging employees in process improvement initiatives, coaching and counseling the team. Engages the HR department with recommendations personnel actions including hiring, dismissals, salary, and job change actions.
  • Defines training needs and implements programs for continuous development of Piping Group’s staff. Manages the training budget.
  • Independently analyzes situations and data to determine best course of action and makes positive and active contributions to assist the organization in achieving its key financial and growth goals.
  • Involved in high level technical interface discussions with clients and sub-contractors to determine the root cause of problems and develop effective solutions to solve them.
  • Supports Sales & Marketing Business Development team with implementing technical strategies through experience to retain existing clients and attracting new business opportunities.
  • Responds to customer technical inquiries. Prepares technical data, presentations and papers for sales, project team and customers.
  • Assists in the tender phase of projects with the objective of ensuring that vendor bids are technically compliant and commercially reasonable.
  • Anticipates project performance problems and implements appropriate measures and lines of communication to ensure timely project completion. Manages the improvement of project execution operating efficiencies within the Piping Group.
  • Defines technology, equipment, and systems needs in the Piping Group and ensures that staff has adequate resources to effectively meet department and individual objectives. Assists in the requisition / approval process and acquisition of new or upgraded capital equipment and software.
  • Receives direction from Chief Engineer and Project Management Team to set project objectives, interpret policy issues, develop new concepts, and resolve problems.
  • Provide guidance to and checks the work of less experienced engineers and designers. Responsible for the technical content of the project. Coordinates new designs and conducts design review meetings.
  • Keeps Chief Engineer informed of progress, potential controversial matters, or significant problems.
  • Occasionally travels to sub-contractor factory or fabrication yard to attend Factory Acceptance Tests and fabrication support respectively.
  • Full management responsibility for Piping Engineers, Drafters & Designers.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

Educational Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a 4-year accredited university.

Relevant Experience

  • At least 15 years of direct experience in the offshore oil & gas, shipbuilding, or single point mooring industry.
  • At least 5 years related engineering project lead or supervisory experience including process improvement successes, manhour budget preparation and project scheduling responsibility.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience with excellent organizational and leadership capabilities.
  • Considered a technical authority in offshore piping design and industry codes.
  • Experience with one or several of these other products is highly desirable. LNG, LPG, Condensates, LCO2, Ammonia, H2, or Cryogenics.
  • Must have good oral and written communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and team building and motivation skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of the AVEVA Software Platform (E3D, AVEVA Engineering, MDS, Cat’s and specifications).
  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Proficient with Ceasar II Pipe Stress Analysis Software.
